Water Assisted Liposuction

Liposuction to remove unwanted fat deposits can be performed using a variety of advanced techniques. Here in Tucson, Dr. Alfaro uses water assisted liposuction as an optional method of body slimming. By using water to dislodge fat deposits, the process can be simplified and you can experience even better slimming and toning results.

Water assisted liposuction is not a weight loss alternative, but can be used to help shed the last few pounds that do not respond to diet and exercise.

What to Expect During Water Assisted Liposuction

What is it?

Water assisted liposuction is a surgical procedure performed by your plastic surgeon to fine-tune or contour areas on your body where small, stubborn pockets of fat are present.

Surgery time:

1-2 hours

Recovery time:

up to 3 weeks

How Water Assisted Liposuction Works

A local anesthetic with sedation is typically used during the procedure. In some cases, a general anesthetic may be used.

To begin, Dr. Alfaro will make a small incision at the treatment site. In water assisted liposuction, he will use an instrument which sprays a stream of water at fat deposits, dislodging them before they are removed with a thin cannula (tube) that is attached to a suction device. After fat removal, Dr. Alfaro will close the incision with sutures and apply a surgical dressing.

After Liposuction

When you leave Dr. Alfaro's practice, you will likely need a ride home and help around the house for a couple of days. It is not uncommon to experience some swelling or numbness as you heal from water assisted liposuction, but these side effects will dissipate. If you experience discomfort following your procedure, Dr. Alfaro may prescribe medication to help you manage it.

A compression garment is frequently worn for up to three weeks after your procedure. While you may need to wear the compression garment for a few weeks, you will return to Dr. Alfaro's practice sooner to have your sutures removed. As long as you maintain a healthy diet and exercise, the slimming effects of your water assisted liposuction in Tucson should be long lasting.

When is water-assisted liposuction superior to the tumescent technique?

Unlike the traditional technique, dislodging of the fatty tissue does not require physical effort by the doctor. Because fat removal is easier, trauma is minimized in the surrounding vessels, nerves, and other tissues.

Fluid is simultaneoulsy instilled and suctioned out, reducing the swelling and distortion in the treated areas. Meanwhile, fat cells can easily be preserved for use in other procedures that you may desire.

Are there special risks with the water-assisted technique?

All other possible liposuction complications can occur with the water assisted iposuction technique.

Will I have scars after water assisted liposuction?

Scarring is minimized, because the liposuction cannulas are placed through very small openings (less than a quarter of an inch). These incisions typically heal nicely, so they are not noticeable. When possible, they are also placed in areas that are covered by clothing.

How much downtime is needed after the surgery?

Downtime is about the same as tumescent liposuction. Recovery time varies with all liposuction procedures, depending on the number of areas treated and other factors. Patients should expect up to 3 weeks of limited actiity. Your surgeon will provide specific post-operative instructions for returning to work and scheduling follow-up appointments.

How is fat harvested and reused?

After the fat is removed in liposuction, it can be grafted in desired body areas to reduce wrinkles, scars and contour depressions. Fat may also be used to augment some areas, such as the buttocks, for cosmetic enhancement. The fat, which has been preserved in liposuction, is first purified before the doctor administers injections for fat grafting.
