Outer Thigh Lift

Post-dramatic weight loss, patients may choose to undergo thigh lift surgery to correct loose skin that now hangs from the lower body. In his practice, board certified Tucson plastic surgeon Dr. Alfaro performs thigh lift procedures for patients who have experienced dramatic weight loss, such as with bariatric surgery.

This loss of weight can leave skin loose on the body. By removing loose skin from the thighs, Dr. Alfaro can help improve patient's self-image as well as their ease with which they find clothing that fits well.

What to Expect During a Thigh Lift

What is it?

A thigh lift is a surgical procedure performed by your plastic surgeon in which loose tissues and skin are removed from the thighs to create a more toned, slender appearance.

Surgery time:

2-3 hours

Recovery time:

4-6 weeks

How a Thigh Lift Works

Before your thigh lift surgery begins, Dr. Alfaro's anesthesiologist will administer a general anesthetic which will help you sleep through the procedure.

To start the surgery, Dr. Alfaro will make an incision along the insides of both thighs. He will take care to make the incision in an inconspicuous location, where any scarring will be minimally visible. At this point, he may use a thin tube called a cannula to liposuction out any small pockets of fat that have not previously responded to diet and exercise. This tube will be attached to a vacuum-like device that will suction out targeted fat cells.

Once he has eliminated any surplus fat, Dr. Alfaro will remove the loose tissue and skin that hangs from the thighs. By removing this skin, he is able to tighten the remaining tissues to create a slimmer look. When he has tightened the remaining skin, Dr. Alfaro will close the incision with sutures and apply a surgical dressing. At this time, compression garments will also be applied to both thighs. These will be worn for several weeks and will help maintain the new, more trim look of your thighs.

After Thigh Lift Surgery

After your surgery, Dr. Alfaro and his staff will require that you have a ride home. You should also make plans to have help around the house for several days. Swelling and discomfort are possible during this initial recovery period. Dr. Alfaro may prescribe medication to help you manage discomfort.

Though your activities will need to be limited for a few weeks, Dr. Alfaro may ask you to begin moving around and walking a day after surgery. Two weeks later, you can add light exercise to your routine. Dr. Alfaro will let you know when you can stop wearing the compression garments, but you should expect to wear them for several weeks after surgery.

Provided you stick to a healthy diet and regular exercise regimen, the results of your thigh lift should last a long time.

Thigh Lift FAQ

What is thighplasty?

A thigh lift (aka thighplasty) reshapes the thighs by reducing excess skin and fat, resulting in smoother skin and better-proportion in the lower body.

Who's an ideal thigh lift candidate?

The best candidates for thigh lift have excess soft tissue along the inner and/or outer thighs. If you're considering thigh lift surgery, plastic surgeons recommend that you be 1) healthy, 2) a non-smoker, 3) realistic in your expectations, 4) committed to a healthy lifestyle.

How long is recovery after a thigh lift?

Recovery time varies, but patients should plan for 4 to 6 weeks of limited activity. Walking is usually advised the day after surgery. Tape and a compression garment are worn for approximately 3 weeks.

What are the risks of thigh lift surgery?

Possible complications of thigh lift surgery include: unfavorable scarring, bleeding (hematoma), infection, fluid accumulation, poor healing skin loss, blood clots, numbness or other changes in skin sensation, anesthesia risks, skin discoloration and/or swelling, fat necrosis, major wound separation, asymmetry, pain, unsatisfactory results, unacceptable visible deformities, deep vein thrombosis, cardiac and pulmonary complications, recurrent looseness of skin, sutures surfacing through the skin, possibility of revision surgery.

Are there alternatives to a thigh lift?

In some cases, liposuction of the thighs may be enough to achieve the desired result. These patients are usually younger with good skin elasticity and do not struggle with excess skin, but mostly stubborn fat deposits.
