How Restylane Works

Before Restylane injection, your skin will be cleansed. Because Restylane contains the anesthetic lidocaine, a topical anesthetic (or numbing cream) is typically not necessary, but this is an option you can discuss with the doctor.

With a special technique, Restylane is injected beneath the surface of your skin at the targeted area. This will immediately add volume to the skin as the hyaluronic acid binds to the water and natural HA in your tissue. Dr. Alfaro may then gently massage the area to promote a smooth result.

After leaving our Tucson office, the treatment site may feel overly full, but this will subside shortly. The results of your Restylane treatment can last up to a year, as your body naturally metabolizes the hyaluronic acid. When your results start to fade, you can return for touch-up treatments.

Hyaluronic Acid FAQ

What is hyaluronic acid?

Hyaluronic acid is a natural substance found in your body. High concentrations are found in soft connective tissues and in the fluid surrounding your eyes. It's also in some cartilage and joint fluids, as well as skin tissue. It is extracted and reformulated and now has become one of the most popular kinds of injectable fillers.

What conditions can be treated?

Hyaluronic acid injections can be used to improve the skin's contour and reduce depressions in the skin due to scars, injury or lines. You can see potentially dramatic improvements for acne scars, cheek depressions, crow's feet at the corner of your eyes, nasolabial furrows, frown lines, marionette lines, scars, smoker's lines, and forehead lines.

Who's a good candidate for hyaluronic acid?

Hyaluronic acid fillers are good for patients who want to improve their appearance temporarily. It's not a permanent solution and it won't stop the aging process. Some people opt to have these injections to delay the time when cosmetic surgery is more appropriate. It's a good choice for enhancing your appearance until you're ready for a permanent surgical option.

How does hyaluronic acid correct wrinkles?

When this gel is injected, it acts like an inflated cushion to support facial structures and tissues that may have lost volume or elasticity due to normal aging. It also brings water to the surface of skin to keep it looking fresh and supple.

How long do results last?

The injections last between three to five months, depending on your life style, body chemistry and the rate at which you are naturally aging. To maintain their youthful appearance, most people have new hyaluronic injections two to three times a year. If you decide not to re-treat, your appearance will return to its original condition. Wrinkles and scars will return, and plumped lips will lose volume.
