Neck Contouring

Neck Lift or Liposuction

A neck that has begun to sag with age, or exhibits banding, can be dramatically improved with a neck contouring procedure performed by Tucson plastic surgeon Dr. Alfaro.

By accessing the tissues and muscles of your neck, Dr. Alfaro is able to remove the excess that contributes to the sagging quality and lift remaining tissues for a smoother appearance. At the same time, he may also use liposuction techniques to eradicate fat deposits on the neck for a slimmer look.

How Neck Contouring Works

For your neck contouring procedure, you will be given a local anesthetic with sedation or a general anesthetic by Dr. Alfaro's anesthesiologist. The goal of either anesthetic is for you to sleep through the procedure.

In an manner similar to that of a facelift, Dr. Alfaro will begin your neck contouring by making an incision in front of your earlobe and extending back to your hairline. Through this incision, he will be able to access the underlying muscles of your neck. Here, he will remove and suture some of the muscle, removing the banding effect they can cause for some patients. He will then use a thin tube called a cannula to suction out any pockets of excess fat that are present, ensuring a smoother appearance. He will then close the incisions with sutures and apply a surgical dressing and compression band.

For the first few days of your recovery, you will need to keep your head elevated and avoid turning your head, even in your sleep. A day or so after surgery, you will be able to shower with care. If you experience swelling or discomfort, these can be alleviated with the application of an ice pack or with medication prescribed by Dr. Alfaro.

To maintain the new contours of your neck, you will need to wear the compression band for up to three weeks. During this time, many patients choose to wear scarves or high-collared shirts to conceal the band. It can take up to three weeks before swelling has subsided and you are able to see the full results of your neck contouring procedure. However, after healing has finished, your neck will appear slimmer and more youthful than before.
