Liposuction can be performed under the chin, or on the hips, thighs, and abdomen.

Common areas for men include under the chin and around the waist, or on the chest to correct gynecomastia.

The best candidates for liposuction are of normal weight with localized areas of excess fat-- for example, in the buttocks, hips, and thighs.

The pockets of fat that cannot be removed through dedicated diet and exercise can actually be eradicated with liposuction procedures. In his Tucson plastic surgery practice, Dr. Alfaro performs liposuction for patients who are near their goal weight but still struggle with some areas of persistent fat.

Though liposuction is not a weight loss method, it can slim the body in ways diet and exercise cannot fully achieve. This procedure can be performed on most areas of the body and breasts and even around the lower face, to remove a double chin.

What to Expect During Liposuction

What is it?

Liposuction is a surgical fat removal technique performed by your plastic surgeon. It is used to remove stubborn fat that does not respond to diet and exercise.

Surgery time:

1-2 hours

Recovery time:

up to 3 weeks

How Liposuction Works

For your liposuction procedure, you will receive one of two anesthetics, depending on the amount of fat to be removed. For smaller procedures, a local anesthetic with sedation will be administered. For some larger removals of fat, Dr. Alfaro may require the use of a general anesthetic. Either way, you will sleep through the procedure.

Dr. Alfaro will begin by making a small incision at the treatment site. He will then insert a small tube called a cannula through this incision. This tube will then be used to remove the fat with a vacuum-like device. He will move it carefully around the fat deposits at the treatment site, removing the excess. This method of liposuction allows Dr. Alfaro to ensure a smooth result.

Once Dr. Alfaro has removed the appropriate amount of surplus fat and toned the treatment area, he will close the incision with sutures and apply a surgical dressing. He may also apply a compression garment which will maintain the new contours of your body. You will likely need a ride home and someone to help you around your home for a couple of days after liposuction.

Recovery after liposuction can vary depending on the area treated and the amount of fat removed. You may experience swelling or numbness of the treatment site, both of which will fade over the next few days. Any discomfort you feel may be managed with medication prescribed by Dr. Alfaro. You may need to wear the compression garment for a few weeks, but your sutures will be removed by Dr. Alfaro sooner.

As long as you maintain a healthy diet and exercise, the results of your liposuction procedure should be long-lasting.

Liposuction FAQ

What body areas can be treated with liposuction?

Liposuction can remove stubborn fat cells from almost anywhere on the body including the thighs, abdomen, back, arms, neck, love handles, chest, and buttocks.

What should I expect after liposuction?

When you leave our facility, the treated area will be covered with a compression garment to promote skin contraction. You should have someone help you get home and perhaps stay with you for the first 12-24 hours. The doctor will prescribe medication to manage any pain you may experience and will ask that you return to our practice in the days or weeks after your procedure for check-ups.

What are the risks of liposuction?

The risks of liposuction include uneven contours, nerve damage, irregular pigmentation, infection, fat clots, blood clots, excessive fluid loss or fluid accumulation, scarring, anesthesia risks, bleeding, change in skin sensation, skin discoloration or swelling, asymmetry, pain, damage to deeper structures such as nerves, blood vessels, muscles, lungs, and abdominal organs, poor healing, persistent swelling in the legs, deep vein thrombosis, cardiac and pulmonary complications, possible need for revision surgery.

Can I lose weight through liposuction?

Liposuction surgery is not a treatment for obesity and is not a replacement for regular exercise and good eating habits. People with stubborn areas of fat and who exercise regularly are the best candidates for this procedure.

How much does liposuction cost?

The cost of liposuction can vary widely. The price may vary based on the surgeon, the type of procedure performed, the location, and the facility. Schedule a consultation to learn more, and ask about financing plans if necessary.

Are there alternatives to liposuction?

Though liposuction is the most effective means of removing unwanted localized fat, some patients who have recently lost weight may also exhibit excess, sagging skin. In this case, liposuction alone will not yield the result they likely want. For excess skin, the doctor performs other body contouring procedures like a tummy tuck, thigh lift, body lift and a breast lift.
