How Lip Enhancement Works

For surgical lip enhancement, patients commonly receive a lip implant in their top lip. To insert this, Dr. Alfaro will make a small incision on the inside of your upper lip, where it will not be visible. He will then insert the implant through this small incision. When the implant has been placed, Dr. Alfaro will close the incision with sutures and apply a surgical dressing.

For non-surgical lip enhancement, Dr. Alfaro often uses injectable fillers like Juvederm or Restylane. To fill out the lips, he will inject a conservative amount of the product in one of two places. Fillers are often used in the area where your lip meets the skin under your nose, or where the wet and dry parts of your lips meet. To ensure a natural result, Dr. Alfaro may only inject a small amount of the product. Once he carefully injects the filler, he may massage your lips, helping to shape them and maintain the natural contours.

After your lip enhancement with an implant, you will need to keep your head elevated for a couple of days and adhere to an oral hygiene regimen to ward off infection. After a week or so, your sutures may be removed. As you heal, any discomfort or swelling you experience can be managed with the application of an ice pack.

Following injection lip enhancement, the recovery is much shorter. You will need to avoid strenuous activity for a day, but your should be able to resume your normal routine.

The effects of an implant-based lip enhancement will be long lasting. To maintain fuller lips with an injectable filler, you will likely want to visit Dr. Alfaro's practice within three to six months as the effects wear off.

Lip Augmentation FAQ

How does lip augmentation work?

Lip augmentation is usually achieved with the injection of hyaluronic acid dermal filler. The skin is cleansed and the doctor administers a topical anesthetic or dental block. The filler can be injected 1) where the skin beneath your nose meets the lip and 2) where the wet and dry parts of your lips meet.

A conservative amount of the filler is injected. The goal will be to improve the size and shape of your lips while maintaining their natural lip shape. After the injections, a brief massage of the lips can help even out the placement of the product and avoid lumps.

What happens after lip augmentation?

After lip augmentation, the effects of the anesthetic can linger for a few hours. You may experience some swelling of the lips, which will go away quickly. After two to three days, you will be able to see the full results of your lip augmentation. On average, the effects can last three to six months. As your body breaks down the filler, you may wish to return for touch-up treatments.

What are the possible side effects involved with lip augmentation?

The most common side effects from lip augmentation include swelling or bruising on or near the lips. The application of an ice pack can control these possible side effects.
