A Latissimus Dorsi flap uses muscle, fat and skin from the back tunneled to the mastectomy site and remains attached to its donor site, leaving blood supply intact.

Breast Reconstruction with Autologous Tissue

Breast reconstruction with the lat flap technique involves the transfer of skin, tissue and blood vessels from the upper back to the breast mound. It is performed after mastectomy, i.e. surgical removal of the breast and cancerous breast tissue.

This technique is one of several techniques performed by Dr. Alfaro in Tucson. As an integral part of breast cancer treatment, the lat flap procedure can help restore a normal, feminine shape.

Inpatient / Outpatient Inpatient
Surgery time: 2 to 4 hours
Recovery time: Recuperation time in hospital or surgery facility for 1 to 3 days, followed by recovery of 3 to 6 weeks.

How Latissimus Flap Surgery Works

During surgery, the patient is asleep under a general anesthetic. Dr. Alfaro removes a section of donor tissue from the middle of the upper back. He then transplants it, with a blood supply, to the chest.

The grafted tissue requires a blood supply to survive in the new location, so blood vessels of the donor tissue are tunneled beneath the skin as well. The doctor shapes the tissues to reconstruct the new breast.

During follow-up procedures, the reconstruction is refined further, but these operations are less complex and typically require local anesthesia.

After Breast Reconstruction

A patient will usually need 1 to 3 days of recuperation in a hospital or surgical facility. After discharge, she will likely need assistance around the home for a few days. Approximate recovery time is 3 to 6 weeks. Dr. Alfaro will provide specific instructions for recovery, which should be followed closely.
